2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Change Comes After Mixed Response
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a distinct game identity.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete text from the president's announcement:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. After some time of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having devoted the recent years producing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to continue seeing the progress of the game in the months to follow.
The President

Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that evolve every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."
The game has not yet received an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but players can expect further news as development progresses.
