EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
